June 9, 2020

Dear OLPH Families, Welcome to JUNE! The weather has finally improved and we’ve been blessed with some beautiful days.

Our eighth graders finished their classes on Friday but the graduates will need to wait a bit to celebrate together. In the ever-changing world of government regulations, and in an effort to keep everyone safe and healthy, tentative plans are underway for an outdoor, in-person graduation on the evening of July 9. Let’s hope the mosquitoes practice social distancing, too!

The last day for the rest of our students will be on Wednesday, June 10. The teachers have some exciting plans for their final days with our children. They continue to do amazing work and I thank them for their continued efforts to keep our children engaged in their remote lessons. It surely took a village to keep our students learning in these unusual circumstances.

I want to acknowledge the work that you, our parents, have done since March 16. On that day, you began your journey as an accidental homeschooler. I have been quite vocal about my objection to people referring to the process we’ve experienced as “homeschooling” because it is completely different than what parents who choose to homeschool, who choose not to enroll their children in a typical school of any kind, do each day. Those parents choose curricula tailored to their child’s needs and their family’s choices. They set the agenda for the day. I laud their efforts and know that it takes an immense amount of time and commitment to make that choice. This was not your choice!

What you were asked to do is nothing like that. You have been asked to execute assignments handed to you from curricula you may not be familiar with. Your job may now also be done in your home, and allowing your children to play with friends has been put on hold. You didn’t sign up for any of this! Seems pretty unfair, right? Well you made it through! Take a deep breath!

Never in our wildest dreams could we have imagined that the last day of school in our final year would be celebrated like this. Each of you will be in your homes away from our precious building on Main Street on Wednesday as the school year ends. You have created the bridge for your children between your home and our school. The teachers and I thank you from the bottom of our hearts. For 56 days you managed what may have felt impossible at times. Bless you for that! Wishing you a summer filled with warm days, cool treats, and an abundance of love.

God bless,

Cynthia Smith

Dear Parents and Guardians:

Governor Murphy announced today that all public and private schools in New Jersey will be closed for the remainder of the academic year.

He stated: “This is a difficult decision and I know that many students, parents, and staff would like to be able to return to school. However, I have been unwavering on the message that we need to make decisions based on science, not emotion. And while New Jersey is making great strides in mitigating the spread of COVID-19, science tells us that at this point, we can’t safely re-open.”

Re: Cognia Re-Accreditation

Dear Parents and Guardians:

Good wishes are extended to you and your loved ones as we navigate and adjust to life’s changes during the COVID-19 pandemic.

As remote learning continues, educators continue to assess current practices and gain insights into areas for growth and responsiveness in an ever-changing environment. Each of our Catholic schools are taking part in a five year review for re-accreditation to assess progress, to establish new goals, with the focus on continued student learning and growth. The Cognia re-accreditation process involves all elementary and secondary schools in ongoing continuous improvement.
